The acronym "CAM" stands for "Backhero Posture Corrector ReviewControlled Ankle Motion". Many individuals will refer to it as a "CAM boot", or a "walking boot" as well.Basic Function of a CAM Walker A person may need a CAM walker who has injured their ankle (either a fracture or sprain) or there is a fracture located in the patient's foot. In a general sense, these braces are like a removable cast that allows a person to be able to monitor their skin and clean the involved limb; unlike a cast.
There is also a rocker bottom that is incorporated into the sole of the brace as well. Why? - The reason for the rocker bottom is that the CAM walker will most likely be set at a 90 degree angle. Therefore, the normal stride pattern of a patient will be changed (for good reasons) and the rocker bottom will help to give them back some flow into their gain pattern. (See your brace provider about your particular ankle joint setting for questions.)
The ankle is set at a 90 degree rigid setting and the forefoot section is almost always rigid as well. This helps to prevent movement that constantly agitates an injured foot or ankle.
