Is it Hypothyroidism or Iodine Deficiency?

I was diagnosed with a low TS3 Thyroid Rescue 911 level a few months ago. I was informed that I would have to go on thyroid medication for the rest of my life. I informed my doctor that I wanted to wait before I started any medication. About a few weeks later, my husband went for his physical and it was found that he had a low TS3 level as well. Now, this was very un-usual for both husband and wife having the same diagnosis. I started researching hypothyroidism and its causes and possible natural methods of curing this condition. I found that our problem may be due to an iodine deficiency.

With us trying to eat healthier over the years, we greatly reduced our intake of salt. Plus, I was into "couponing" (using coupons along with sale items) and instead of purchasing normal iodized salt, I purchased non-iodized salt. So, the small amounts of salt I used did not include iodine. I also took more notice of the type of salt that was used when we went to a restaurant. I started asking the waiter/waitress if they used iodized salt in their foods. After a few crazy looks, most found the salt was NOT iodized. I really think it may be because non-iodized salt is slightly cheaper than iodized salt and companies may be trying to cut corners. Even though, we would eat out from time to time and the food was probably loaded with sodium, we were not getting any iodine from those salty foods.

I specifically purchase iodized salt and added it to my meals for two straight months (I had to increase my high blood medicine in the process due to the increase in sodium). I wanted to see if it made a difference. To my surprise, it made a big difference. Miraculously, when I had another thyroid test, the results came back normal.
